Stoneygate Farm is a relatively new farming enterprise established in 2013 by Malcolm and Bernadette Tennant who had no previous experience or family connection with farming, butchering or retail. The goal was to establish a traditional stock style farm being largely self sufficient with minimal impact on the environment and landscape. We wanted to use traditional English breeds that would benefit from a low input system.
The cattle spend approximately 7 months grazing our pastures and 5 months housed indoors fed on silage. The cattle are suitable for being left outdoors all year round but during winter they can do a lot of damage to the grass/ground in wet conditions which then takes longer to recover in the spring, hence we bring them inside to minimise the damage, and preserve the ground for the following spring. Calving takes place indoor and outdoor.
The pigs are free range and are born outside and remain outside all year. They live in arcs bedded with straw.
The sheep live outdoor all year round grazing our pastures with hay/silage being used to supplement their diets during winter.
